American Civil Rights Coalition Michigan Review hosts Ward Connerly at the University of Michigan for a Press Conference
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Diane Schachterle (916) 444-2278 or ds@acri.org (www.acrc1.org) SACRAMENTO, CA-Reacting swiftly to the Supreme Court’s recent decisions affirming the use of racial preferences in university admissions, American Civil Rights Coalition (ACRC) Chairman Ward Connerly will hold a press conference at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, July 8. The conference will be located on the steps of the Graduate Library (The Diag) and will be hosted by the Michigan Review, an undergraduate publication. Due to the an extraordinary outpouring of interest from Michigan residents, the American Civil Rights Coalition has conducted a study of possible actions that should be taken to advance the cause of equal treatment under the law in light of the recent Supreme Court decisions. Among such actions is the possibility of launching a statewide initiative campaign in Michigan to prevent the use of race. Mr. Connerly led similar efforts in California in 1996 and Washington state in 1998, both to success. Mr. Connerly will announce the next step for all those who oppose the government-sponsored practice of treating people of different “races” differently. “The Court may have allowed racial preferences with their decision, but they did not mandate them,” said Mr. Connerly. “The people still rule in this country, not robed justices. If the people want color-blindness and equality under the law, all they have to do is stand up and say so. I’m sure that they will-and we’re going to make sure everybody hears them loud and clear.” The American Civil Rights Coalition is a national civil rights organization created to work with grassroots supporters and elected officials at the local, state and federal level to end racial and gender preferences and racial classifications. ACRC engages in activities including, but not limited to, initiative campaigns and lobbying and is based in Sacramento, California.
